Botox® is a purified protein that relaxes facial muscles that cause facial wrinkles. By relaxing these muscles, wrinkles are softened or may completely disappear, leaving the face with a smooth, refreshed appearance and restoring a natural, youthful look.
Results from a single Botox® treatment can make a dramatic improvement in one’s appearance. In my experience, the results are not only dramatic, but they are also very predictable. The results from one physician to another may differ based on the practitioner’s technique or amount of Botox® used in each particular problem area.
Yes! Botox® was first approved by the FDA in 1989 for blepharospasm and strabismus. Since that time, the use of Botox® has been applied to other conditions and areas of the body with excellent results. Botox® is approved for use in over 75 countries. More than 2,000 articles in scientific and medical journals have been published on the use of Botox® and it’s safety. Over 11,000,000 Botox® treatments have been performed for cosmetic purposes since cosmetic approval in 2002.
Botox® is approved for patients of age 18-65. Those with known hypersensitivity to Botox® or its ingredients, those with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and those with active infection at injection sites should not receive treatments with Botox®. Also, Botox® is not recommended for women who are pregnant or who are breast feeding.
No. Individual results vary, but average effects from a single Botox® treatment range between 3-6 months. After this time, the muscles lose their “relaxation” and wrinkles will reappear. This can be treated with a repeat Botox® injection.
*Individual results may vary
Botox® is most commonly used to treat horizontal wrinkles of the forehead, frown lines in the glabella (between eyebrows), and crow’s feet around the lateral portion of the eyes. Advanced uses include:
- chemical brow lift
- treatment of lower eyelids “jelly roll”
- treatment of “bunny lines” or “wolf lines” on the nose
- nasal tip elevation
- “gummy smile” treatment
- upper and lower lip wrinkles
- “marionette lines”
- “cobblestone chin”
- platysmal bands on neck
- axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating)
After a consultation to determine your goals with treatment, Dr. Walker will perform a history and physical exam to ensure that you are a good candidate for treatment with Botox® and identify any factors that could lead to an undesirable result. As an example, you should not take aspirin or NSAIDs for 1 week prior to your treatment as this will increase your chances of bruising.
If you are deemed a good candidate, the short procedure consists of a few very small injections of the Botox® purified protein into the targeted muscles to block nerve impulses that activate the muscle contractions which cause wrinkles.
Botox® treatments are fast, minimally invasive and deliver dramatic results. All of this with no downtime.
Following your treatment, you should contract the injected muscles a few times during the first hour. Keep your head up for the first 6 hours, and do not lie flat. Avoid vigorous exercise until the following day and avoid excessive heat or cold for the first 24 hours.
Do not expect to see a change the following day. Most people see results between days 3-7, but full effects can take as long as 2 weeks.
My first goal is to understand your goals and expectations with Botox® treatment. Assuming that you are a good candidate for treatment, I will formulate a plan with you that will give you the best outcome. Each physician’s injection style is different, and it is an art form in itself. My style is the result of my training in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery as well as subsequent training in advanced Botox® injections.
My desire is to help you achieve a youthful, refreshed appearance and avoid an “operated-on” or “frozen” appearance. Also, while there may be some discomfort with injections, I will minimize your pain and give you a very pleasant experience.
There are many people that provide Botox® treatments out there. I feel it is important to find a physician that has been appropriately trained in the use of Botox®. Not only have I completed training in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, but I also have advanced training in Botox®. My belief is that once you have experienced my technique and see the results I can help you achieve, you will return for future treatments. This relationship will allow us to develop a consistent and very predictable result.
In my experience, Botox® injections have dramatic results and are extremely predictable in my hands. This leads to very happy patients! I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your goals!
