Your Guide to Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers include hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm®, Voluma®, Restylane® and Belotero®), poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra) and calcium hydroxylapetite (Radiesse®).  These dermal fillers are used to soften lines and wrinkles, restore volume that has been lost with aging, enhance volume and shape to lips and cheeks, and improve the appearance of depressed scars.

Also included in dermal fillers is fat grafting, in which a small amount of your fat tissue is removed by liposuction and then injected to obtain more permanent results.

Are dermal fillers effective?

Absolutely! Results from treatment with dermal fillers can make a dramatic improvement in one’s appearance. Not only are the results dramatic, they are also immediate!

Are dermal fillers safe?

Complications from dermal fillers are uncommon, but may include bruising, infection at injection site, lumps, rash, and under- or over-correction of wrinkles. These risks vary between type of dermal filler and the skill of the injector. It is important to find a physician who is trained in the science and art of dermal fillers. Dr. Walker has not only completed plastic surgery training, but has also received additional training in dermal fillers and advanced applications of dermal fillers.

Are dermal fillers for everyone?

Although complications from dermal fillers are rare, they are not recommended for everyone. Patients should be healthy and should not have a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis. They are not intended for those with bleeding disorders. In addition, dermal fillers are not recommended for women who are pregnant or who are breast feeding.

Are the results from dermal fillers permanent?*

With fat grafting, approximately 50-70% of the fat will survive and will produce permanent improvement in smoothing lines/wrinkles and restoring volume where it has been lost.

For other dermal fillers, average duration of effects from a single dermal filler treatment will last 5-6 months or even longer for some fillers. During your consultation, we will discuss the different options and which dermal filler is best to fit your individual desires and expectations.

What are dermal fillers commonly used for in Plastic Surgery?

Dermal fillers are commonly used to soften lines and wrinkles, restore volume that has been lost with aging, enhance volume and shape to lips and cheeks, and improve the appearance of depressed scars. Specific areas and advanced techniques include:

  • nasolabial folds (commonly referred to as “parentheses”)
  • glabellar creases/wrinkles between eyebrows (commonly known as the “11’s”)
  • crow’s feet lines around lateral portions of eyes (if non-responsive to Botox®)
  • lip enhancement/augmentation
  • oral commisures (lateral portion of mouth that tends to turn down with aging and gives an “unhappy look”)
  • marionette lines
  • chin crease
  • cheek/chin augmentation
  • liquid face lift

What does a dermal filler treatment consist of, and what is the downtime?

For 1 week prior to your dermal filler treatment, you should avoid taking aspirin, NSAIDS, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of Vitamin E supplements.

After a consultation to determine your goals with treatment, Dr. Walker will perform a history and physical exam to ensure that you are a good candidate for dermal filler treatment and identify any factors that could lead to an undesirable result.

If you are determined to be a good candidate, the short procedure consists of injections of the filler into the problem area to smooth creases and wrinkles, restore volume where needed (lips, cheeks), and produce a more youthful contour to your face.

Dermal filler treatments are a quick, minimally-invasive treatment that delivers immediate dramatic results with no downtime.

Following your treatment, you should avoid vigorous exercise and excessive heat or cold for the first 24 hours. Avoid massaging the injected area, but you may apply pressure to areas if a lump is detected.

Dr. Walker’s take on dermal filler injections:

Understanding facial anatomy and the changes that take place as we age is vital to developing a dermal filler treatment plan that will help restore a youthful appearance. I have seen many suboptimal results that have resulted from not understanding these changes and how to best achieve a desirable aesthetic result. My goals are to help you achieve a natural, youthful look by restoring volume where appropriate, smoothing creases and wrinkles, and contouring each area to give you the most pleasing aesthetic result possible.

During your consultation, we will discuss your goals in detail and jointly formulate a plan that will help you achieve your desired look. My treatment technique was developed through my training in plastic and reconstructive surgery and also through additional training in advanced applications of dermal fillers. My technique is designed to give predictable, aesthetically pleasing results while also minimizing injection discomfort.

You should expect to see immediate results following your dermal filler treatment at Allure Plastics! I look forward to meeting you and helping you regain a more youthful look!
