What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing is a non-surgical treatment that uses laser energy (Erbium:YAG or CO2) to improve the quality of damaged skin by removing the superficial layer of skin and stimulating the deeper layers to produce and remodel collagen. This can be “full field” which treats 100% of the surface or fractional which treats a fraction of the skin resulting in quicker recovery.

How does skin resurfacing work?

The laser energy delivered safely removes a layer of skin to a depth determined by your physician. The depth of treatment will depend on the skin condition, your desired outcome and expectation for downtime. Treating skin with a laser stimulates the growth of new collagen, which improves the skin’s thickness and resilience. The skin surface will also re-grow with fresh, healthy cells, which will give your skin a younger rejuvenated appearance.

What conditions can be treated with skin resurfacing?

  • Fine lines to deeper wrinkles
  • Scars
  • Aged or sun-damaged skin
  • Liver spots
  • Improve your complexion
  • Pigmentation irregularities
  • Poor skin tone and texture

What areas of my body can be treated?

Most skin areas can be treated. Popular treatment areas are the face and neck, though some people also treat the chest and hands. At your consultation, we will discuss your individual concerns and develop a treatment plan suitable for you.

How many skin resurfacing treatments will I need?

Excellent results can be obtained in just one treatment, however the number of treatments needed may vary from patient to patient. The number of treatments required will also be dependent on your tolerance for downtime, which will play a role in determining our depth of treatment. In general, superficial peels such as a nanolaser peel or microlaser peel will require a series of treatments, while a deeper resurfacing will likely require only a single treatment.

At the time of consultation, we will take into account the correction that is needed and your tolerance for downtime. These factors will play a large role in helping us personalize a plan based on your specific needs and goals.

Can you describe a typical skin resurfacing treatment?

Your skin will be cleaned in the treatment area and your eyes will be protected with safety shields. The laser handpiece will be positioned above the skin held in place as the computer-guided scanner moves the laser beam around the treatment area. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the procedure usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes, but may be longer based on depth of treatment.

The comfort level of laser resurfacing varies from patient to patient and depends largely on the depth of treatment. For shallow treatments, the procedure is often tolerated with the use of a topical anesthetic. For deeper treatments, subcutaneous local anesthetic may be required.

What results can I expect with skin resurfacing?*

The top layer of your skin will re-grow and can be covered with makeup in about one week, at which time you will see noticeable improvements in your skin’s texture, tone and wrinkle appearance. Deeper laser treatments also stimulate the growth of new collagen over the next 4 to 6 months. During this time, the skin may show increasing improvements in tightness and resilience.

What is the recovery like following skin resurfacing?

Immediately following the procedure you may experience redness and a sensation resembling sunburn. Swelling may also occur in the treated areas. You will be given specific after-treatment care recommendations based on the depth/aggressiveness of your skin resurfacing treatment, which may include analgesics and application of an ointment to keep the skin moist.

Complete healing will depend largely on the depth of treatment. Healing times for shallow treatments can be as little as 2-3 days up to 4-7 days for medium depth peels and fractional laser treatments. For deeper treatments, it may take up to 7-10 days for the skin to heal before makeup can be applied.

You will be given procedure-specific instructions for care after your skin resurfacing treatment, including recommendations for specific skin care product needs. Your skin will be sensitive to ultra-violet light after the procedure, so you must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed. It is recommended that you always use some level of solar protection to avoid sun damage and premature aging of your skin.

Dr. Walker’s take on skin resurfacing:

Skin resurfacing plays an important part in facial rejuvenation. Often, the reason an individual seeks consultation for facial rejuvenation is a decline in the quality and appearance of their skin. While a good home skin care regimen can improve the skin over time, the results are not as dramatic as that seen with laser skin resurfacing. Laser skin resurfacing can quickly improve the appearance of the skin, correct signs of aging, and provide a good foundation that can be maintained with quality skin care regimen and less invasive treatments such as chemical peels or Forever Young BBL treatments.

One of the tricky aspects of skin resurfacing is how to individualize these treatments to each person. The main factors to be considered are the degree of correction needed for that individual and their tolerance for downtime. Once these factors have been addressed, I can formulate a treatment plan for that individual client.

Skin resurfacing also comes into play with those who seek surgery for facial rejuvenation. In combination with procedures such as face or neck lifts to correct for gravitational changes that occur with aging and the use of dermal fillers to restore volume, laser skin resurfacing can add the “WOW” factor to other surgical procedures and give patients the results that can exceed their expectations.
